Chapter Four

Oak didn't particularly like Valentine's Day. However, he'd never actually had anyone to spend it with—and that had unexpectedly changed with the arrival of Joel in his life.

Throughout the past days, they'd spent a fair amount of time together. Every day, Joel visited the orphanage. The kids already loved him, and not only because he tended to bring presents. He was so genuinely warm with them, and he had a quiet strength that called out to the children who'd lacked support in their previous lives.

It was not the same type of strength Taze had. Oak wasn't quite sure if Joel was an Alpha or not. Joel hadn't told him much about his life prior to moving here. He lived alone and worked a day job as a postman, which suggested that at one point, he must have left his pack, but Oak had no idea how that had come about. Joel also seemed to instinctively know things about the kids, which must have obviously helped in him picking the box of plush toys. But when Oak had made a comment about it, Joel had tensed, so Oak had backed off.

He didn't intend to pressure Joel about anything he wasn't ready to discuss, but that didn't mean he didn't burn to get to know Joel better—in every possible way.

This was why he ended up accepting the offer Noel made him. "I've already talked about it with Taze," Noel said. "We'll take over the orphanage that day, and you can have our reservations. You deserve this. And really it must be fate, since your mate's name rhymes with mine."

Oak would have ignored the blatant excuse. He would have said that Noel didn't have to do this, that he didn't owe Oak anything. But he knew this was important for Noel too. Besides, it was very difficult to find a good locale for a Valentine's dinner at this point. Yes, there were a lot of restaurants with all sorts of offers, but only a handful actually catered to the shifter community. Far better to pick one of those, since there were no guarantees that one of them wouldn't slip up and display a part of their legacy.

Joel was visibly nervous when he came to pick Oak up. Oak slid into the seat next to the driver and squeezed his mate's knee. Almost instantly, Joel relaxed. Oak often wondered what it was that had Joel so worried, but he couldn't ask about it, not yet.

They shared a brief kiss—the one intimacy they'd allowed each other so far, since they'd sort of decided to take it slow. "Happy Valentine's Day," Joel whispered against his lips.

Oak shivered at the promise in Joel's voice. Suddenly, he wanted to skip the dinner altogether. The backseat of Joel's car looked very appealing.

But Joel pulled away from their kiss, and while he was obviously aroused, he made no move to take things further. Oak would have been frustrated if he hadn't been ready for it. In a way, he appreciated the fact that they weren't rushing into things.
